fantastic sea views from the Kantiang Bay View restaurant

Kantiang Bay View Resort is an inexpensive, family-friendly, backpacker-style resort situated in a prime location, directly on the beach in Kantiang Bay.

The resort provides 16 large, air-conditioned rooms with hot water showers and 10 small and simple, bamboo fan rooms with cold showers. There’s also a few cheaper air-con or fan rooms in the main building.

All rooms are en-suite and most bungalows are situated on, or just a few steps from, the beach. Even the better rooms are rather functional and basic, but they do the job, and hey, in this location and for these prices, what more do you expect! The fact that they’re full, all-year round shows they fill a popular niche – beachfront location at almost rock-bottom prices.

Open all year round, and the only budget-accommodation in the bay that’s actually on the beach, the resort attracts a really good mix of people of all ages. In the budget price-range at this end of the island, it’s the only buggy-friendly resort, so it’s popular with families with young kids. To keep the prices as low as they can, they don’t include breakfast in the price of the rooms.

[editor's review:]
PLUS – Incredibly reasonably priced accommodation in a prime location on one of the best beaches on the island (right next door to Pimalai, the most expensive resort on the island and a fraction of the price). A good choice of rooms to suit a variety of budgets, (including very low-budget) and lots of family-sized rooms that can sleep 3-4 people. A great restaurant and a fun and lively bar with live music, fireshows and a great atmosphere every night.

MINUS – The staff vary in their competence, but unite in working hard to uphold their reputation as rude, unhelpful and surly – for which they are famous. If you can remain cheerful and good humoured despite their attitude, you’ll almost certainly be able to catch them off guard and glimpse a smile or even make firm friends. You shouldn’t let this put you off staying here – rather aim to see it as an almost comical quirk! The music from the bar can be heard a bit too easily from some of the rooms (particularly the building rooms) and may not be to everyone’s taste. The band usually stops playing soon after midnight.

TIP – Pay your restaurant and bar bills as you go along to avoid any unexpected surprises/mistakes at the end of your stay. This will make you more popular with the staff into the bargain.
It’s a ‘love it’ or ‘hate it’ kind of place. If you’re not happy there, move on. The staff certainly won’t care (they’re full all year round anyway), and you’ll be much happier.

The resort offers on-site, open-air massage – one of the few places in the bay where you can get a massage with a sea view and feel the cool breeze from the ocean. They also have an internet room, tour shop and travel booking service, communal TV and motorbikes for rent (including some newer automatic models).

The restaurant generally serves extremely good food with a few unusual dishes such as their delicious ‘steamed crab curry’. During high season, there’s a fresh seafood BBQ on the beach every evening, which is always very popular. Alcoholic drinks must be ordered separately from the bar as it’s a Muslim resort. They operate a slightly odd system where you have to pay for each drink individually as you order it. Although a little disconcerting at first, it avoids any confusion when it comes to paying for the food. This works especially well when the restaurant gets busy and confusion seems to be fairly common!

The popular Why Not Bar sits on the beach, just in front of the resort and regularly pulls in a good crowd. They have a live band that plays every night during the high season (lots of rock-reggae covers) and the atmosphere is laid-back, friendly and great fun. The nightly fireshows on the beach are not to be missed.

You can arrange and book day trips, excursions and onward travel from Kantiang Tour, the resort tour office. The resort also runs their own snorkelling trips by Longtail boat – famous all over the island for the 4-Island Tour. Don’t miss the cheap massage service on the beach where you can enjoy a relaxing massage whilst listening to the waves lapping on the beach and feeling the cool coastal breeze.

Kantiang Bay View offers the cheapest beach-side accommodation in the bay and, despite the staff’s reputation for being a little abrupt at times, travellers continue to return, time and time again. The resort is regularly fully booked, all year round.

Accommodation Overview

Beach Front Bungalow is the resort’s only large, detached, air-con bungalow, that’s situated right on the beach front. Located at the far end of the resort in a shady, secluded spot, it’s definitely the best bungalow in the whole resort. The bungalow can sleep up to 4 people in 2 large double beds. The beds are in the same room as each other and are separated by a small bed-side table. The room also has a fairly basic en-suite bathroom with hot shower, a small fridge and a private terrace boasting a perfect view of the beach and straight out over the bay. This is a true bungalow-on-the-beach dream.

Sea View Bungalows – 3 large air-con rooms, each with 2 double beds that can sleep up to 4 people. The beds are in the same room as each other and are separated by a small bed-side table. The rooms also have a fairly basic en-suite bathroom with hot shower, a small fridge and a private terrace with a view of the beach from the side of the balcony. The bungalows are built in rows that face other bungalows.

Partial Sea View Bungalows – 3 air-con rooms, each with a double and a single bed that can sleep up to 3 people. The beds are in the same room as each other and are separated by a small bed-side table. The rooms also have a fairly basic en-suite bathroom with hot shower, a small fridge and a private terrace with a view of the beach if you lean over the side of the balcony, or look over other bungalow’s balconies nearer the beach. The bungalows are built in rows that face other bungalows.

Mountain View Bungalows – 4 air-con rooms, each with a double and a single bed that can sleep up to 3 people. The beds are in the same room as each other and are separated by a small bed-side table. The rooms also have a fairly basic en-suite bathroom with hot shower, a small fridge and a small terrace with views towards the mountains behind the resort. The bungalows are built in rows that face other bungalows.

Bamboo Bungalows – 10 small and very simple fan rooms, each with a double bed that can sleep up to 2 people. The room has a very basic en-suite bathroom with cold-water shower and a small wooden terrace complete with hammock. The bungalows are built in rows that face other bungalows and suit backpackers or people travelling on a low-budget. The bamboo rooms are located furthest away from the bar and offer the most peaceful accommodation in the resort.

Standard Building Fan/Air-Con Rooms – 5 rooms that can been booked as either air-con or fan, each with a double and a single bed that can sleep up to 3 people. The rooms are located upstairs in the main building above the kitchen, reception and bar areas and have fairly basic en-suite bathrooms with hot shower. The wide corridor-balconies actually have very nice views over the resort. You can often hear the music from the bar from these rooms and if there is a party going on, it can be quite loud.
