Deluxe Bay-View Rooms at Lanta Marine Park View Resort

Lanta Marine Park View Resort sits firmly in-between, budget and mid-range accommodation. Set on the hillside at the north end of Kantiang Bay, this popular resort offers a wide range of accommodation from basic bamboo huts to stylish sea-view bungalows – all in a rustic, driftwood style. Access to the beach is via a steep flight of uneven steps.

All 26 bungalows have en-suite bathrooms with toilet and hot shower. Most rooms are equipped with Air-Con, but a few of the bamboo rooms remain fan-only. The front-row bungalows are built on high stilts over the cliff-edge and offer truly amazing views out across Kantiang Bay.

[editor's review:]
PLUS – Jaw-droppingly good views, fantastic restaurant and funky, treehouse-style communal areas. Romantic, driftwood charm is achieved to perfection. Accommodation is well-priced to attract people looking for something a step up from backpacker, whilst retaining just the right amount of ‘character’. All rooms come with a hot shower (even the cheap, bamboo huts) and the cheaper rooms tend to offer the best value for money – although you’ll miss out on the stunning views. A refurbishment project is underway and completed rooms are looking good. The constant stream of returning guests shows that the resort must be doing plenty right. If viewed as a budget-resort with frills, this is an excellent place to stay, providing top-notch facilities and a fun atmosphere. If viewed as a mid-range resort you may find yourself a little disappointed by the lack of finishing touches.

MINUS – The resort is somewhat let down by a few remaining shabby rooms and patchy service. By attempting to bridge the price gap between budget and mid-range, the resort struggles to deliver on everyone’s expectations and this may account for the strikingly mixed bag reviews. Their top-end prices are in line with cheaper rooms at some of the more up-market resorts – remember here, you’re paying for the front-row and deluxe view, rather than for a higher standard of accommodation. If you value a sleek bathroom and slick paint-job in this price bracket, go for a bottom-of-the-range room at a more expensive resort. The resort’s two premier rooms, whilst offering direct beach access and good views, are unfortunately located in the worst possible place for disturbance from the three liveliest bars in the bay. Access to many of the rooms involves scaling flights of steep, uneven steps. Some rooms have yet to be refurbished and show signs of neglect.

The bungalows are set within well-maintained, tropical, mountain gardens and are connected via a series of rocky, uneven pathways and steps. Some of the rooms are set quite high up the hillside, so a torch is a good idea after dark to help you negotiate your way!

The resort’s Bay View Restaurant offers tiered, open-air dining with unmatched views of Kantiang Bay. The menu includes both Thai and Western cuisine and the food is generally extremely good. As is usual in Thailand, the Thai dishes tend to be better, however the kitchen has a Thai and European influence, so most items on the large menu are very tasty.

In the evenings the Seafood Barbecue and Salad Bar offer a tempting selection of fresh seafood, grilled to your specifications. The Bay View Restaurant is also available for private functions and group dinners.

The wood and bamboo ‘Shroom Bar’ is one of Kantiang Bay’s most popular night spots. With a variety of platforms and seating areas to choose from it’s the perfect place to find a romantic spot for two, have a relaxed meal or groove the night away. The bar stocks a good selection of beer, wine, spirits and freshly-squeezed juices and are happy to provide table service to all the various levels, seating areas and hideaway spots.

WIFI is available to guests and there are multiple computers accessible all-day and until 10pm. Internet is charged by the minute with no minimum charge. Thai massage is also available on site.

Accommodation Overview

Deluxe Bay View Rooms: are the 2 largest and most expensive, but not overall best, rooms in the resort. They do offer direct beach access and fabulous beach views (sea views are better from the Bay View Rooms – located further up the hillside). The tiled rooms sleep up to 4 people in 2 large double beds. The beds are in the same room as each other and are separated by a screen.

The tinted glass-fronted rooms open onto a spacious, tiled balcony with table and chairs. The bathrooms are fairly basic but have been renovated recently. Each room contains fan & air-con, mini-fridge and hot water shower. Whilst the rooms are large, cool and clean, they are fairly functional and lack the charm of the quirkier, more wooden bungalows situated higher up the hillside. Ideal for families or groups wanting to economise by sharing.

Both Deluxe Bay View Rooms are located directly underneath Shroom Bar, right next door to Aqua Bar, and lie across the bay (which seems to act as a natural amphitheatre) from Why Not Bar. This can lead to an interesting mix of musical styles – not always conducive to a good night’s sleep – particularly during the christmas and new year party season.

Bay View Room: are the best rooms on offer. Truly stunning views over Kantiang Bay from private cliff-side balconies – the views tend to get better and better, the higher you go, but so does the hike! The lower rooms can sometimes hear the music from Shroom Bar. A6 is often claimed to be the best of the lot. Most of these rooms have been renovated already, with only the very highest ones on the mountainside awaiting their revamp. The style is simple and stylish with a basic, but OK bathroom. All Bay View Rooms have air conditioning and feature sliding glass doors to the balcony, fan, mini-fridge and hot water shower.

Sea View Rooms: are situated amongst the well-maintained, tropical gardens and most give a partial sea view. These simple rooms offer particularly good value for money if you’re looking for an air-con room at a low price. All Sea View rooms come with air conditioning, fan, mini-fridge and hot water shower. You’ll be very happy here if you’re not expecting too much.

Garden View (Bamboo) Rooms – with/without Air-Con: are low-cost alternatives for the budget traveller. With the added bonus of a hot shower, these simple and basic, wood and bamboo bungalows are clean and inexpensive. Each small hut has a private toilet and shower. These traditional-style bungalows are the accomodation of choice for backpackers and long-term residents.
